Three students were hit by a car yesterday afternoon on the University of Massachusetts campus, according to UMass police.
UMass Police Sgt. Ian Cyr said that all of the victims are University students.
Police said three women were crossing Massachusetts Ave. at the intersection of Sunset Ave. near the Southwest Residential Area at 4:40 p.m. when they were hit by a Nissan Maxima.
All three victims were transported to an area hospital. As of press time, two had been released and one was still being treated for a head injury. All of the victims were conscious when police arrived, Cyr said.
Police withheld the identities of the victims as of press time because next of kin had not been notified.
There were three people in the car that struck the women, all of whom were uninjured.
Police identified the driver as Felicia Nitch, 18, of West Springfield. Nitch is a student at UMass. As of press time, she had not faced criminal charges related to the accident.
The two other passengers in the vehicle were only identified by police as students from Westfield State College.
Police said the accident is still under investigation. Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident, Cyr said.
"We are investigating environmental conditions … With respect that the sun may have played a factor in visibility," said Cyr, who added that the accident appeared to have occurred at a "low-speed."
In the past week, five people have been hit by cars on the UMass campus.
Last Tuesday, two union workers were hit by different cars while protesting outside the construction site of the new North Residential Area, near the Sylvan Residential Area. The victims were identified as Stephen Keane and Daniel Redmond of Holyoke. They were treated at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton for their injuries.
All of the car accidents remain under investigation.
