Last night, after classes had let out and the campus had begun to clear, the Student Union started filling with an odd assortment of students. Black-clad emo punks, skank-dancing ska fans and hip-hop aficionados packed the ballroom as it prepared to host the UMass Battle of the Bands.

The winning student band – On Trak and Malato – will serve as the opening act for the UMass Spring concert. The concert will be headlined by All Time Low, DJ Girl Talk and hip-hip artist Lupe Fiasco.

When the Battle of the Bands began at 7:30, the atmosphere was more akin to a middle-school social than a rock concert. As the bands began to play, the lights stayed on, the crowd stayed silent and – for the most part – people stayed in their chairs and off of the dance floor.

The first act started things off on a high note, with a predictably “ska” group known as the Ska-Some Society. With talented instrumentals and an up-beat attitude, they received high scores from the judge panel and gave high hopes for the rest of the evening.

Sadly, those hopes were to be dashed in short order, as the following performers were more or less along the lines of hip-hop karaoke and high school garage bands.

Presiding over the battle was MC Roy Wood Jr., a comedian who has been featured on Def Jam Comedy and Comedy Central. Between acts, Wood kept the crowd entertained, if not attentive, with solid commentary on college basketball, hunting and the notorious “super-F”.

Few of the middle acts were noteworthy. Members of the crowd slowly got out of their seats over the course of four or five acts, but there was little energy evident. And no one got more than a half-hearted cheer out of the fans.

This all changed, however, when Quarterlife CRISis took the stage. This all-UMass band upped the energy with danceable songs and an original entry which earned them straight 9-out-of-10’s from the judges.

Following Quarterlife was the all-girl rap group Solo Sexx. By far the most unusual entry in the competition, Solo Sexx was like a cross between Zenon, Girl of the 21st Century and Missy Elliot, complete with luminescent back-up dancers and plenty of glitter. Perhaps despite of their unique appearance, the girls were undeniably talented, and brought home top scores for the first round.

Finishing off the first round was On Trak and Malato, a hip-hop group that outshined similar acts proceeded.  Although they were a bit hard to understand, they won over the crowd, and along with Quarterlife and Solo Sexx, moved on to the second round.

The second round of the competition proceeded with better performances than the first. Solo Sexx’s offering brought the ballroom to its feet, and finally put some enthusiasm into the melancholy crowd. On Trak followed them up with a superior act, and despite a lack of original material, Quarterlife was well received.

Despite an impressive display of rap talent, Solo Sexx was eliminated at the end of the second round. “I think personally that we did really, really good, we were really original,” said front girl M.C Velvet. “Unfortunately, we didn’t see eye-to-eye with the judges, and that really sucks. We lost to a band that did covers, so what can you say?”

The final round went much like the first, with On Trak showing its skill and versatility, and Quarterlife providing talented instrumentals, but still singing covers. Decision time came and the crowd’s opinion was heard, On Trak and Malato were declared the winners. “The competition was tough,” said A-Live of On Trak. “The girls did their thing, and the rock band did their thing.”

Bring back Devo and get The Aquabats to play at the Mullins Center. THEN we'll have some real musical creativity on campus. :)

If thats what you consider original then you need to get out of the house more.

how were they stealing lyrics? solo sexx was the tightest, most original act ive seen in years, let alone in the battle!

If we're going to talk about cover bands, why isn't solo sexx immune to this? I saw them play, and while their beats were suppossedly "original" (and they didn't mind telling you). They stole lyrics like it was going out of fashion like their outfits. Why is lyrics stealing ok but covering songs aren't? you need to check your own facts before you start to insult other bands for something your just as guilty of

Am i the onlyone that feels as if the Collegian singled out Half Hearted Hero a little bit? Were they really that terrible that they deserved to be called a "garage band" and to have their name referenced in a rather demeaning way at the end of the 7th paragraph?

I thought those guys really did something fun and original and really got quite the audience response. Also, they are a legit band who have been playing shows for 4 years and have a full length coming out in 3 different countries on 4 different labels. I don't understand why the collegian would say that they are a "garage band" and that they elicited a "half-hearted response", when in fact people were stage-diving, moshing, and singing along.

It just seems like hey were kind of made a scapegoat here.

Pete from Quarterlife here -

I must say, I love live hip hop, and On Trak definitely does great live hip hop. SoloSexx was great - they were one of the most creative and energetic acts I've ever seen, and that ska band hit everything right on and rocked. Congrats to all the performers on a great job. Though I find it difficult to believe that our music actually managed to offend people, it looks like we weren't so well received by some commenters here; hopefully, those who preach open mindedness and creativity can keep an open mind about ALL types of music in the future.

Thanks to the UPC and all the other performers and fans who came out Wednesday night.

@Divine Judgement:

There's nothing "divine" about your comment. I actually had to second-guess myself and look it up; the thesaurus doesn't list "divine" as a synonym for "blind." You must be ugly, because ugly people write in an ugly fashion.

First off, solo saxx were awful, used gimics to get attention, and were a no talent band. Also they were ugly, and ugly people make ugly music. On trak only one because of affirmative action, and all the minorities at the show.

Finally, QLC only covered two songs. They played an original to qualify, so they shouldn't have been disqualified for being unoriginal in the first round. They were clearly the most talented. Also they were beautiful, and beautiful people make beautiful music.

aye yo... let me run game real fast...
1)NONE of you are in UPC... so you can talk all you want but until you get ur lazy ass up and do something about it, you wont be anything but a damn statistic running their mouth behind an anonymous name.
2)Stop hating on the bands. Sure... you can have an opinion, but real talk your opinion means nothing. I want you to think about how many times the greater good was considered over your boney ass thoughts.... happens almost everyday. You think a paper isnt needed but your professor does. Your face hurts now...
3)THE SPRING CONCERT ARTISTS ARE DECIDED BY THE GENERAL BODY!!!! If you would shut up and pay attention to everything we (UPC) puts up, you would notice that you can vote for the people in the fall and we get them in the spring. Sure... its the people that the school suggests that we do not get, but this semester we got 2 out of the 3 top choices the students wanted. So yeah... pay attention to the PURPLE and LIME GREEN logos on stuff and you might get something done with your life ya know.

AND I AM GOING HARD NOW....
all of you guys hating on everybody or bands hating on one another (because I am almost sure some of those anonymous people are from other bands or their groupies), and all of you guys thinking that you talking about some of the artists are garbage and whatever.... come say it to UPC face. You see us everywhere. Our colors are easily spotted. As a matter a fact, come say it to mine. My name is Charles. One of the only males in UPC. Im open to whatever you have to say as long as you do not come at me wrong. Do so and get your block knocked.... hard. Be big and come say it to me instead of behind a firewall ya know??

Then you might get a little more respect

yo its ob vious why solo sexx wasnt picked for the third round...they obviously had more talent than both the other bands put together, but it was their name that did them in...umass wont take on anything thats even remotely controversial or challenging ot the status quo....solo sexx just doesnt look as good as a promotional flyer. sucks cause they were the clear winner in terms of talent and style. better luck other places, ss!

QLC only played two cover songs. And they seemed like really nice guys. The other acts were good too, but I don't get why people are ganging up on QLC.

It doesn't matter if QLC supposedly had the "best original submitted content"...the fact is, their set consisted of OTHER ARTISTS' songs and should not even have made it into the second round if theyw ere going to base their success off of using other artists' work.

When I saw "All Time Low" in the article I thought that was the theme of the Spring Concert. Seriously, Girl Talk? What is he going to do, push a button on his computer then dance? That's not a concert!

Everyone who came out had a lot to bring to the table. The show was hard to judge no doubt. When you place a mix of talent such as what we saw on stage, it's hard to say where the winner stands. Truth is taking it to a crowd stand point, (engaging the audience keeping them entertained by the performers on stage and keeping them involved in the show and putting on a performance that was pleasing to the ears and eyes) the first round took AS MANY OF THOSE PERFORMERS AS IT COULD to the front ground. Solo Sexx, Quater Life Crisis and OnTrakEnt & Malado battled hard for the top spot.

From a judges standpoint origionality was not in the scores but entertainment was. In the last round I know that the crowd made a clear statement that origionality should have been the victor, and praise for origional artistry came through.

I'd be lying if i said we had it in the bag the whole time. Everyone who came out put up a good fight. "Batlle of the Bands", it is what it is. There can only be one victor. For those who feel they were robbed, I am sorry you feel that way. However it's no reason to hate or lash out. If anything simply show support that if given a second shot that group would change up and put up an even better fight and take home the prize. Take a loss not as a let down but a stepping stone. Whats done is done and look forward to your next shot to stand out or be a SUPPOTRIVE fan and represent.

For those who are unsupportive with ur feedback and simply here to hate, you obviously wish to be unamed or anonamous. BEST OF LUCK WITH THAT! Not getting under the skin of anyone trust me, this is a college competition, we're adults here. Keep the kiddy stuff at home.

Great job to everyone and keep putting up a good fight. Give everyone around you a reason to strive for more from thier music. Be different Be innovative and Be entertaining, but above all Be Yourself.

Heather, u are soOoOoO ryte! QLC was just mainstream sellout stuff, they didn't deserve it! Even though they won over half of the crowd, got top scores from the judges, and were acclaimed to have the best submission of original content to the competition, they still sucked and didn't deserve the third round as much as you! Keep doin your thing SoloSexx, your act is the most original thing i've evar seen!
