Sign Man redefines meaning of enthusiasm

At first glance, Edward Rubin seems like the average University of Massachusetts alumnus. By day, he is an elected member of the UMass Alumni Association Board and the owner of Harvard Marketing Group, Insurance and Financial Services. By night, Rubin becomes a man UMass sees as one of the biggest sports fans in the arena, a man motivating both players and fellow fans to step up the game.

Police file charges against additional 34 people in connection with December riot

UMPD says more charges may be forthcoming

For the second time in about a week, the University of Massachusetts Police have charged more students in connection with the December riot in Southwest, according to a press release. Criminal charges have been filed by the UMPD against 34 additional people, 31 of them students, states a UMass News and Information press release.

Students react to changes in UMass housing policy

As the deadline for housing selection approaches, many returning students at the University of Massachusetts are noticing a change in the application process. Due to a Housing Assignment Office (HAO) policy implemented earlier this year, the same room reservations - once a campus commonplace - are no longer available to returning students.

Kentucky considering 'fire-safe' cigarettes

BARDSTOWN, KY - Debbie Coulter said she supports the right to smoke at her restaurant, but the 52-year-old shudders when she recalls a recent incident in which she fell asleep smoking and her nightgown caught fire. "It scares me to death," said Coulter, whose husband helped extinguish the fire.

Study: herpes drug reduces transmission of AIDS virus

Treating genital herpes can also help keep the AIDS virus under control in women with both infections, and might reduce the spread of HIV, too, the first major study to test this strategy suggests. Many people with HIV are also infected with the herpes type 2 virus, and scientists have long known that herpes sores on the genitals can make it easier to become infected with the AIDS virus and could increase the risk of transmitting HIV to others.

Clinton backs minority students

MIAMI-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday criticized President Bush's education policy as doing little to help minorities and acknowledged that she is still searching for ways to raise minority student test scores. More needs to be done to prepare children for school and to get parents involved in their education, Clinton said while visiting a historic black neighborhood during her first campaign trip to Florida since announcing her candidacy.

Custody battle leads N.Y. cops to stomach-churning squalor

NEW YORK-Police called to a suburban family's home encountered a stomach-churning scene: dozens of urine-filled bottles strewn amid animal feces, soiled toilet paper and trash piled several feet high. The discovery at the white, two-story Cape Cod-style house was made after authorities were summoned by a man embroiled in a bitter divorce; his estranged wife lived there with their three children.

Minn. leads in US energy policy

PAUL, Minn.-Minnesota put its faith in a future fueled by renewable energy Thursday as the governor signed a law requiring utilities to generate a quarter of their power from renewable sources such as wind, water and sun by 2025. Considering where Minnesota stands now - about half the power produced in the state is from coal, and only 5 percent from renewable sources - the move is the most aggressive in the country, analysts say.

U.S. military finds insurgent car-bomb factory in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq-The U.S. military warned Thursday that insurgents are adopting new tactics in a campaign to spread panic after troops uncovered a car bomb factory with propane tanks and chlorine cylinders - possible ingredients for more chemical attacks following three explosions involving chlorine.

Kids exempt from passport rules

WASHINGTON-Children will be exempt from new rules that will require travelers to show passports when entering the U.S. at land or sea borders, the Bush administration announced on Thursday. The new passport requirements will take effect as soon as January 2008.
