Veney, SGA to hold forum: plan to discuss allegations of discrimination

At 3 p.m. this afternoon, the Student Government Association (SGA) will host a press conference in the Dukes Room of the Student Union with former athlete Jordan Veney, in regards to her removal from the University of Massachusetts track team because of what she believed to be racial discrimination.

SGA tries to solve textbook costs problem

Students are selling their books back this month - many of them at a substantial loss. But textbook prices seem likely to rise again this fall as students, faculty, the publishing industry and bookstores can't seem to fix the problems that push prices up. Already, students at the University of Massachusetts and similar institutions spend an average of $900 on textbooks each year, according to the Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group.

HOLYOKE - From 100 feet away, this four-acre piece of land looks like a plot of dirt and grass with old wooden sheds scattered throughout. But take 30 steps towards it and you can see rows of cilantro, strawberry vines and garlic plants speckle the brown soil with deep green.

This is the place where the unique alpaca roams. It is just off the road going to the University of Massachusetts that is a city within itself; where the word zoo is used to describe social lives rather than the home of these animals. Here is where students learn veterinary principles, while still able to see the brick of the library and the cement of freshman towers - the intersection of college life and wildlife which seem to be one in the same.
