Tomorrow, Central Hill will host Rocktober Fest, a mini-rock festival featuring four local bands. The event is free to all students to attend and food and drinks will be provided. It is going to be held from 2-7 p.m., with an opener band, Leaving London, slated to go on around 1 p.m.
Rocktober Fest is a new event put on by the Central Area Government, lead by Governor Mike Megaro. In previous years the Central Area Government has put the event on in the spring, hosted in the same location. This semester they decided to do things differently when the headlining band, Streamline, contacted them and requested to play a show at UMass.
Since Megaro and his fellow Central Area Government members were experienced in putting on local shows at Central, had connections, knew the bands and had the appropriate equipment available, Central Area Government decided to go forward with the band's request and put on the show a semester early this year.
Leaving London, a funk/powerpop band from the immediate area is tentatively scheduled to open the show for the evening. They are a smooth-sounding band that enjoys playing their music. They went to school and lived in dorms together, and soon there after discovered their similar musical interests.
The other bands on the lineup include The After Hour, Deep Pocket and On The Rocks.
The After Hour is an experimental rock group from Auburn, Mass., who just recently played the DCU center arena in Worcester, opening for the trendy pop/rock band Boys Like Girls. Despite being unsigned, they have an EP out now available to purchase and listen to on various music sites, such as iTunes.
Their music incorporates an underlying storyline with heavy rock rhythms. Combined with their persistent, hard-working attitudes, this band is sure to quickly become the next big thing to come from Massachusetts. They already have won MTVU's "Best Music On Campus" award, and are certain to have a successful future.
