Legislature approves $1 billion for life sciences

The state senate recently passed a $1 billion bill that could help the University of Massachusetts Medical School cure everything from cancer to diabetes. The bill, which according to the Worcester Telegram & Gazette allocates $500 million for infrastructure and new state research facilities, will allow for the new life science research center at UMass Medical.

SGA and GSS officials sign agreement with administration

Celebration and controversy marked last night's Student Government Association Senate meeting. The meeting began with a ceremony in which leaders of both the SGA and Graduate Student Senate signed the official agreement between the administration and the United Student Action Coalition.

Residents learn vital self-defense skills

Each month, resident assistants in student residence halls are required to organize educational programming. Last Tuesday, the RA's of the Grayson-Field cluster put on a program that no one should be without: self-defense. "Each floor was assigned a theme, and ours' was conflict," said Kristen DiMarzio, an RA in Grayson.

Congress ponders taxes of online sales

Online shopping saves students from having to pay taxes that can amount to rates near 7.5 percent. This tax-free haven is derived from a 1992 Supreme Court ruling, which made it illegal for states to collect taxes unless the merchant had a physical connection to the state and its resident customer.

UMass Employees raise money for charities

The University of Massachusetts Community Campaign (UMACC) surpassed its goal of $425,000, as campus employees donated $454,833 to local, regional and international charitable organizations. This year's participation rate was 37 percent with 1,761 individual donors.

Students fight female body image issues

The Women's Health project at University of Massachusetts, hosted "In our Bodies: Experiences of Bodies and Self," an artistic workshop that allowed students to raise awareness about women's body image issues Tuesday night. The event took place in the hallway outside the Craft Center in the Student Union, as student participants needed space for their bodies to be traced into life-sized silhouettes.
