John McCain and the myth of the 'true conservative'

John McCain is an American hero. And he is also, albeit disputably, a conservative. The notion that he is something else - usually emanating from an anti-minority and rather regrettable wing of the conservative movement - is politically unsound and devoid of any realistic basis.

There are a million reasons to change your name; but when it comes down to it, doesn't your name function as a key part of your identity? For Carmen Electra - who was born Tara Leigh Patrick, Samuel Clemens -who wrote under the pen name Mark Twain, and Barack Obama - who was known as Barry until college, a name change became the identity alteration of choice.
