Students remember VTech tragedy one year later

Three minutes was all the time some University of Massachusetts students needed to make a strong statement. Yesterday, about 32 students from UMass, Amherst and Hampshire College participated in a "lie-in" outside the Student Union to remember the Virginia Tech shooting and protest easy gun access.

Fire at Gorman residence hall

A tree outside Gorman hall in the Central residence area at the University of Massachusetts caught fire at around 1:00 a.m. Thursday morning. Residents were evacuated for approximately half an hour as Amherst Fire Department extinguished the blaze. The fire reportedly started in a pile of branches and brush left by physical plant employees who had been trimming the tree early Wednesday morning.

Lobby Day yields scholarship funding

BOSTON - There were no coffee and donuts as requested in the original proposal given to University of Massachusetts administrators. Instead, students and staff participating in Lobby Day got a day off, lunch and support from a major Statehouse lawmaker. Representative Kevin Murphy, co-chairman of the Higher Education Committee, called PHENOM founding-member Max Page and had good news.

Student earns Goldwater Scholarship

University of Massachusetts junior Michael Krainin of Sharon, Mass., has been awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship - making him one of only 321 students in the country to receive one. These scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and go to students planning to seek jobs in the fields of science, mathematics or engineering.

Students call for Fair Trade coffee on campus

It's no secret that college students like their coffee. With late nights and early classes, some students depend on the caffeine in coffee to get them through the day. And there's no shortage of places to buy coffee; there are more than 10 spots on the University of Massachusetts campus alone.

MHC hosts bone marrow drive

Adults and children who are battling deadly bone marrow diseases such as leukemia and Aplastic anemia, are searching daily for bone marrow matches that will provide them with healthy stem cells, and a better chance at a healthy life. The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), an ally in the fight, held a marrow donor drive Monday on the Mount Holyoke College Campus in the Betty Shabazz Cultural House.

Groups organize multicultural Seder

The 10th Annual Freedom Seder was held at the University of Massachusetts Campus Center on April 13. Members of Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities came together to celebrate a decade of multicultural unity. The Freedom Seder is a ceremony that celebrates multicultural and interfaith unity based on the themes of the Passover Seder.
