The Student Government Association introduced Shaun Robinson as its new speaker of the Student Government Association senate, and Cheryl Feinstein as associate speaker at its senate meeting last night.
Robinson defeated senator Devin Ashe, who ran for SGA president this spring. Robinson's campaign focused on his experience as an organizer and activist on campus, having served as the interior chair of the ALANA caucus for the past year. He focused on the need for the senate to overcome periods of stagnation and he promised not represent just students of color, but the entire student body.
"I look forward to obtaining sustainable progress in the senate that will continue even after I am done," Robinson said. "I want to help encourage the fact that service and work can be benefits in themselves."
Ashe focused on his experience as a senator and his experience with managing large groups during the 'Humans vs. Zombies' game. He also claimed that he would do a good job remaining neutral during senate debates.
Feinstein, who ran unopposed, offered her experience serving as a senator on the finance committee and her organization skills as her qualifications for the positions.
"I look forward to serving the senate, helping people to convey their ideas and pass motions to help the entire student body," Feinstein said.
For current SGA leadership, the elections mark a new era for the body.
"I am very excited to work with Shaun," SGA president Malcolm Chu said. "I have had the pleasure of working with him in the past and I know that he will bring a very powerful presence and energy to the senate. I look forward to working together with him and making this year the best."
"I am very excited for the transition," speaker Carla Dominguez added. "I am hopeful for the new direction of the senate. I am sad to leave the position, but I am glad that I am leaving it in capable hands."
