The 2008 Atlantic 10 Softball Tournament started yesterday with two 1-0 pitcher's duels. Fourth-seeded Fordham and fifth-seeded Saint Joseph's played the first of three games, while Game 2 saw No. 3 seed and host school Charlotte square off with No. 6 Saint Louis.
The losers of the day's first two games fought in Game 3 to keep their tournaments alive; like most softball tournaments, the A-10 Tournament is double-elimination. The winner of Game 1 faces top-seeded Massachusetts today, who has won 38 consecutive A-10 games. Game 2's winner will see No. 2 St. Bonaventure in the second game of today's action.
Fordham vs. Saint Joseph's
Yesterday's first game saw a 1-0 pitcher's duel, with Fordham walking off the field as victors.
Both teams managed to move many of their runners into scoring position, but failed to bring them home. The Hawks had two opportunities with a runner on third and one out but could not capitalize.
Fordham's senior pitcher Allison Twarowski came up big in her complete game shutout, anytime runners were in scoring position. Twarowski and Dani Gonzales of St. Joe's had similar pitching lines. Each gave up four hits and struck out five in their outings.
Gonzales started out the day stronger, not allowing a hit until the third inning and striking out three in the first two innings.
Twarowski was not as dominant in the first half of the game. After shutting down the Hawks' top three in order in the first, Twarowski gave up a hit in each of the next three innings.
She found a groove in the end of the fourth that carried her through the next two innings. The senior struck out the side in the fifth and followed up with another strikeout in the sixth; she retired the next three in order as well.
While Twarowski got in a rhythm, Gonzales showed her first signs of slowing down. After getting the side to ground out in the fourth and the first out of the fifth, the junior gave up her second hit to Jocelyn Dearborn.
