The second day of the Atlantic 10 Softball Tournament began early yesterday morning with a victory by the No. 1 seed, Massachusetts, over fourth-seeded Fordham. The loss for the Rams sent them to the loser's bracket to face off in an elimination game with No. 5 Saint Joseph's.

Game 2 on the day saw the third-seed, and host, Charlotte upset No. 2 St. Bonaventure.

Game 3 later that day featured the two schools that opened the tournament on Wednesday. Fordham took the match, 1-0, in a pitcher's duel. Pitching was not the key to the rematch; Fordham's offense took control to win it, 5-1.

Charlotte vs. St. Bonaventure

Although Charlotte was the away team in the box score, it gave its home crowd a show in the first inning.

After struggling to get anything going on offense in their first tournament game, the Bonnies came out in the first inning and produced. All four of Charlotte's runs were scored in the first inning off St. Bonaventure pitcher Sherri Thompson, who gave up five hits, which included two doubles in the inning.

Leadoff hitter Sarah Melene started with a single to right field, stole second and advanced to third when freshman Whitney Williams had a bunt single down the third-base line. During the next at-bat, Williams stole second causing an error by St. Bonaventure's catcher Kara Morenus. With the error Melene came home and Williams advanced to third.

Sophomore Serena Smith drove in Williams with a single to left field, and crossed the plate on a double from Jaime West. The 49ers scored three runs off four hits before Thompson had recorded a single out.

The Bonnies would score once more before the inning on an RBI double by Emily Forbes.

Pitcher Emily Jeffery kept the Bonnies at bay the entire game. The sophomore struck out five of the first six batters she faced and retired the first nine. Jeffery allowed three hits - all singles - in her shutout performance. Not one St. Bonaventure base runner would make it past first base.
