"I thought we played outstanding defense," Sortino said. "They made all the plays."
This isn't the first time Fordham has taken UMass down to the wire. Fordham almost defeated UMass on March 20. The Rams scored two runs off Balschmiter to hold a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh, but UMass rallied late to win 4-2. In second game of the doubleheader Fordham was shutout by sophomore pitcher Bailey Sanders in a 1-0 victory. All three games against Fordham were close with UMass pulling off the same result, showing it can win tight games.
"We're ready to play, I think you have to expect teams to come at you at this time of the year, and if you want to advance you have to be able to handle these kinds of games," Sortino said. "I think it shows that we are on task and we're in a good place."
The last time Balschmiter let up a run was against Charlotte on March 30 when UMass won, 7-1. The run was unearned, however, as the Minutewomen committed two errors in the game. UMass beat Charlotte in Game 2 of the season series, 5-2.
Charlotte knocked off No. 2 seed St. Bonaventure, 4-0, yesterday. Sophomore Emily Jeffery threw a three-hit shutout to help the 49ers advance to the next round against the Minutewomen.
"It's going to be a tough game, we are on their turf and we have to be ready to play," Sortino said.
