The Massachusetts track and field teams will have its first weekend off since the indoor track season. But a few of UMass's top athletes could add a few weeks to their season with a top performance in Durham, N.H., for the New England Championships, May 9-10.
The Minutemen have no representation in the field events, but have several qualifiers in track. Their deepest event is the 5,000-meter run with senior Nils Fischer along with sophomores Andrew McCann, Jonathan Pierce and Nicolai Naranjo.
McCann will also participate in the 10K. He qualified (30 minutes, 4.87 seconds) with a first-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships May 3-4. McCann's time qualified him for the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J., on May 16-17.
Sophomore Tyler Cotto (14.91 seconds) is .06 seconds away from qualifying for IC4As (14.85) in the 110-meter hurdles.
The field for this weekend will vary with schools from all over the Northeast. However, none of the Ivy League schools will be there because they have their conference championships this weekend.
Last season, the men finished 11th overall while the women came in 31st. Both teams are looking for an improved performance from last year, though much of the focus will be on advancing more athletes to next weekend's ECACs and the IC4As and the regionals.
"We want to score as many points as possible," said UMass coach Julie LaFreniere. "But coming off an intense two-day meet, I have to be careful with the [athletes] qualifying in ECACs."
Historically, this weekend features top schools from other conferences such as Boston College and Vermont.
The Minutewomen are bringing 19 athletes to participate this weekend. Senior Christina DeRosa qualified for three events but is scratched from the 10K and 1,500. She will still participate in the 5K.
"This will be her workout for the week," LaFreniere said.
DeRosa qualified for regionals in the 5K at the Larry Ellis Invitational (16:41.49) and ECACs in the 10K. LaFreniere looks for her to qualify for nationals in either race next weekend.
