Ryan Fleming, Collegian Staff
Issue date: 5/13/08 Section: Sports
If you asked me a year ago what I wanted to do when I graduated college I would have gave you an answer along the lines of "I don't know." Somehow, someway, I came to the realization of what I wanted to do with my life; I wanted to be a sports writer.
Going into my first semester of my senior year I was far behind; I was a history major without any knowledge of journalism at all. I knew I would have only one opportunity to write and to gain as much experience as I possibly could. Early February I went down to the Collegian office with my good friend, Scott Feldman, to see if the Sports section needed another writer on their staff.
Three months later I have been elected as an assistant editor to the section because they gave me an opportunity that day in February.
This article is to thank those who helped me along the way and gave an unlikely kid a chance.
Scott Feldman - You have been my friend for about six years now, dating back to the night of the Tyson/Holyfield fight. It was because of you I even went down to the Collegian. You have qualities in you that every friend of yours cherishes. I look forward to being your boss next semester. Even though I could care less about the NBA I hope your Knicks play better even though if they show up to play every game that won't be hard. There's always one thing you can can't on with me - I'll always send the shot girl your way.
Joe Meloni - HOEGAHHHDEN! When I met you in February my immediate impression of you was that you were a jerk and you would make my time at the Collegian, however long that would be, a living hell. I was wrong. You have become my best friend there and a brother-like figure to me. For whatever reason you took a liking to me (look where it has gotten you). HOEGAHHHDEN! Don't worry, whatever Eli says, the NHL doesn't suck, but you already know that. NHL draft trip? The Bruins will beat the Canadiens in the regular season and we will laugh. When I found out you decided you weren't going to cover football in the fall I was really disappointed, I was looking forward to the chance of getting to work beside you and learning from you. But that's ok, this just means that Jeff and I are going to have to step up. You have taught me more than I ever thought I could in the short time I have worked here. HOEGAHHHDEN! I'll see you a few times this summer I'm sure. YOU are the most ridiculous person ever. One more thing, everything I say is important, I'm Stephen A. Smith!
