During a summer that had hordes of moviegoers filing in to see much-awaited films like "The Dark Knight," someone had the courage to remake the Broadway musical "Mamma Mia!" based on the music of ABBA, for the silver screen. And it worked out beautifully.

Universal Pictures, in partnership with Playtone and Littlestar, took the stage musical by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, added dynamite talent like Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth and created a toe-tapper for this generation to enjoy.

The movie takes place on the small Greek island of Kalokair, where Sophie Sheridan (played by the beautiful Amanda Seyfried) lives with her mother Donna (Streep), who runs a hotel named Villa Donna.

Sophie, a 20-year-old, fatherless bride-to-be grew up never knowing the true story about her dad. But after reading her mom's diary she learns that she has three potential fathers. When Donna's mother found out she was pregnant, she told her not to bother coming home - so she stayed in Greece and opened her own villa, trying to make ends meet by hosting tourists. And now, shortly before Sophie is set to marry Sky (Dominic Cooper), the love of her life, she wants nothing more than to have her daddy walk her down the aisle. But which one is it?

The first scene has Sophie rowing to a mailbox with three letters, addressed to Sam Carmichael (Brosnan), an American architect, Harry Bright (Firth), a British banker and Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård), a Swedish sailor and travel writer. She writes the letters as her mother, asking the men to come to the wedding. All three agree.

Sophie and Donna then welcome their best friends, all of whom have made the trip from far-off lands to be at the wedding. Donna takes the car to the local boating dock to pick up Tanya (Christina Baranski), a wealthy three-time divorcee and Rosie (Julie Walters), an author of culinary arts books. Both give wonderful performances. One can feel the connection between the friends almost instantly as they catch up, take playful verbal jabs at each other and reminisce about old times, including when they sang together in a group called Donna and the Dynamos.
