Amherst's battle over books has become an ugly one. According to downtown bookstore owners, the rush to sell student textbooks is marked with deceit and business ethics that have corroded too greatly. Ken Kahler, the director of the University of Massachusetts bookstore, was caught posing as a parent of a UMass student inquiring which textbook professor Suzanne Daly required for her class.
This summer 60 additional security cameras were installed on the University of Massachusetts campus, which brings the total number of the crime-solving and investigative tools placed in residence halls, dining commons and other buildings to over 500. Overall, the estimated cost of the project for the UMass Amherst Housing Services totals $1.
In addition to construction totaling over $40 million dollars this summer, construction and improvements at the Universtiy of Massachusetts continue this semester on the new Recreation Center The center, which is located between Hick's Way and Commonwealth Avenue was designed by Sasaki Associates of Boston.
This year's freshman class continues a trend of higher GPAs, higher SAT scores and higher standards for incoming students. According to the University of Massachusetts' office of institutional research and Collegeboard.com, the class of 2012 consists of approximately 4,100 students selected from the highest ever number of applicants to the University, resulting in the lowest percentage of students accepted.
It has happened before at the University of Massachusetts: a student raises his hand to answer something in a well-populated classroom; and the professor may say, "Yes, Mr. … I'm sorry I don't recall your name. But don't worry, give me a few weeks, and I'll have everyone's name down.
