After its first two games, the Massachusetts field hockey team has one win and one loss. UMass blanked the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 3-0, and fell short of a victory to the No. 13 Boston College Eagles in both teams' season opener on Aug. 29.
The Minutewomen (1-1) had a 2-1 advantage against BC (1-0) at Chestnut Hill until the final 10 minutes of the game. The two transfer students for the Minutewomen proved to be useful against the Eagles, as junior forward Jill Powers scored UMass' first goal and sophomore back, Jackie Tait, fed the ball to senior midfielder, Erin Parker, for the second score for the Minutewomen.
Powers' goal came off a defensive scrum between sophomore forward Katie Kelly and a BC defender. As both players pushed for the ball, it came loose and found its way to the stick of Powers, who deposited it into the back of the net with 32 seconds left in the first half. BC junior forward Chelsey Feole tied the score at one with a shot past a diving UMass defender and freshman goalie Alesha Widdall.
Parker scored off of a blocked shot by Tait with 13:50 left to play. The assist was Tait's first point for the Minutewomen.
The two teams traded goals, putting the Maroon and White on top until BC forward Bob Dirks scored the final goal of the game on a feed from Feole.
The Minutewomen faired better against Quinnipiac in their first home game of the regular season on Aug. 31. Powers scored her second goal in as many games as UMass struck first late in the first half. The score would stay the same until halftime.
The Bobcats were outshot, 8-4, and were outdone, 5-1, in penalty corners in the first frame.
UMass started the second half strong, with a goal by senior forward Katelyn Orlando. Sophomore back Jaime Bourazeris fed Orlando for the score, her second assist of the game and Orlando's 10th career goal.
Just minutes later, junior forward Cher King scored the game-winning goal for the Minutewomen. Powers had the assist on King's first goal of the season.
