Your first week at the University of Massachusetts has reached its commencement. If reading that sentence evokes feelings of sadness and a lack of fulfillment, the UMass Outing Club has the solution. This Saturday, as part of "First Week," the popular Registered Student Organization (RSO) is leading a set of hikes in the picturesque Connecticut River Valley.
A beginner's two-mile hike to Goat's Peak on Mount Tom will be lead by Elliott Ethridge, a UMass senior, and will allow those wary of their endurance level to join in on the fun. A simple pair of sturdy sneakers and a water bottle is all you'll need to make your way to an amazing 360-degree view of the valley.
Students feeling a bit more adventurous can partake in the six-mile hike covering the Seven Sisters. The Seven Sisters comprise a ridge line in the Holyoke Mountain range where charming views of the Connecticut River Valley can be seen throughout the hike.
That trip will be lead by James Cutler, a UMass senior and natural resources major, who has been with the Outing Club for the past three years. Cutler expects the six-mile trek to take anywhere from three to four hours, depending on the group, but encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the day.
"For the Seven Sister's hike, I would suggest a pair of shoes with good ankle support and enough water to keep you hydrated throughout the hike," said Cutler.
Due to the looks of Saturday's weather forecast, a sturdy rain coat would be good item to bring along.
To attend the hike, meet up with the group at the Student Union on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., where a bus will transport you and your fellow hikers to the River Valley. The event is free of charge and welcomes everyone aboard.
The UMass Outing Club, claiming in their slogan to "take people in the woods and do things with them," has been doing so since 1922, and is one of the campus' oldest and most respected RSOs.
Run entirely by the students and community members, the Outing Club offers students a chance to try all sorts of ventures they may not have otherwise thought twice about.
